As parents, it can be difficult to know when something requires a doctor’s visit and when it’s safe to wait it out. Children often recover quickly, but certain symptoms shouldn’t be ignored.
Here are five signs that it’s time to schedule a visit with your pediatrician.
1. Fever That Lasts More Than 3 Days
While fever is common in children, a temperature lasting more than 72 hours — or any fever in babies under 3 months — should be evaluated by a doctor.
2. Persistent Cough or Breathing Changes
If your child has:
Wheezing
Rapid breathing
Labored breathing
A cough lasting more than 10 days
It’s important to have them checked to rule out asthma, pneumonia, or other respiratory concerns.
3. Changes in Eating or Drinking
A noticeable decrease in appetite, difficulty swallowing, or signs of dehydration (dry lips, no tears when crying, fewer wet diapers) require medical attention.
4. Unusual Fatigue or Behavior Changes
If your child is unusually lethargic, irritable, or not acting like themselves, it may signal an underlying issue.
5. Rashes with Fever
Some rashes are harmless. Others, especially those accompanied by fever, require immediate evaluation.
When in doubt, trust your instincts. Pediatricians are here not only for emergencies — but for reassurance and guidance.
